Moving a Piano in Rockville: What You Need to Know

Pianos are one of the heaviest, most awkward, and most valuable items in any home. An upright weighs 300–500 pounds. A baby grand: 500–600 pounds. A full grand: 700–1,200 pounds. Moving one across a room is hard. Moving one down a Rockville townhome staircase or into a Town Center elevator requires specialized equipment, technique, and insurance. Here’s what to know.

Pro100Movers handles heavy item moves in Rockville including pianos, safes, and oversized furniture. Call 800-397-7885 for a piano moving quote.

Types of Piano Moves in Rockville

Upright Piano

300–500 lbs. Tall and narrow. Can be moved on a piano dolly through standard doorways. The challenge in Rockville townhomes: staircases. An upright piano going up or down stairs requires a 2–3 person team with a piano board and straps. If the piano needs to go to the upper level — it’s a careful, slow process.

Baby Grand

500–600 lbs. Must be tipped on its side, legs removed, and transported on a padded piano board. Requires a 3-person crew minimum. Reassembly at the destination includes legs, pedals, and lid. The whole process takes 1–2 hours per location.

Full Grand

700–1,200 lbs. Same technique as baby grand but heavier — requires a 4-person crew and a truck with a ramp or lift gate. Full grands rarely fit through standard doorways without leg removal and side-tipping. These moves need advance planning.

How We Move a Piano

Assessment: Piano type, weight, location (what floor, how many stairs, doorway widths, elevator availability). We measure doorways and stairways before committing to a method.

Preparation: Close and lock the keyboard lid. Wrap the entire piano in moving blankets secured with shrink wrap. For grands: remove legs, tip onto a padded piano board, and secure with straps.

Moving: Uprights roll on a piano dolly through flat surfaces. On stairs, two to three movers use a piano strap system — one person at the top, one or two at the bottom, controlled descent one step at a time. Grands are carried on the piano board by 3–4 movers.

Loading: Ramp from ground to truck, or lift gate. Inside the truck, the piano is strapped to the wall to prevent shifting during transport.

Delivery: Reverse the process. Grands get legs reattached, pedals reconnected, and lid set. Final placement exactly where you want it — we’ll adjust until you’re happy.

Rockville-Specific Piano Challenges

Townhome staircases. King Farm, Fallsgrove, and Twinbrook townhomes have 36-inch staircases with 90-degree turns. Uprights can navigate these with technique. Baby grands and full grands often cannot go up stairs in these homes — the piano stays on the main or ground level.

High-rise elevators. Town Center and Pike & Rose buildings have freight elevators large enough for an upright — but baby grands need to be measured against elevator dimensions. Some freight elevators accommodate them; some don’t.

HOA and building rules. Some Rockville HOAs and apartment buildings have specific policies for heavy item moves. They may require advance notice, additional insurance, or dedicated time slots. We coordinate with your building management.

Before Your Piano Move

Get the piano tuned AFTER the move, not before. Moving changes a piano’s tuning — temperature shifts, vibrations, and the physical move all affect the strings. Schedule a tuner 2–3 weeks after delivery to let the piano acclimate.

Clear the path. Remove rugs, shoes, and any furniture between the piano’s current location and the door. The wider the path, the safer the move.

Tell us about stairs and elevators. The more we know in advance, the better we plan the crew size and equipment. Surprises on moving day (like discovering the piano is on the third floor of a walk-up) delay the schedule and increase risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you move a piano up stairs in a Rockville townhome?

Upright pianos — yes, in most cases. Baby grand and full grand pianos are significantly harder on townhome staircases due to weight and size. We assess each situation individually and will tell you honestly whether it’s feasible.

Is my piano insured during the move?

Yes. Our liability insurance covers piano damage during transport. For high-value instruments (concert grands, antiques), we recommend full-value protection — ask us about options when you book.
